Mentor arrangement
As a new associate you will be assigned two different mentors. One mentor, who is normally another associate, will ensure that you find your feet from the first day at work and become familiar with the daily routines and social environment. The other mentor will be either a partner or a senior associate who shall assist you with your professional development. The mentor ensures that you have satisfactory work assignments and will have regular discussions with you about your development and contentment with the firm. This following up of new associates will also apply for experienced lawyers who start working here at Thommessen.
Thommessen School
Thommessen has a plan for individual development in the first few years of work. Through an associate program we provide assistance for the personal and professional development of our employees, including business understanding and other expertise that is required of a good Thommessen lawyer.
For newly-educated lawyers, in the first year emphasis will be placed on putting into practice what you have learnt in your studies. During the next few years this will become more in-depth. By then many will have decided what area of expertise they wish to specialise in. The continued development in becoming a lawyer takes place with strong support from mentors and colleagues through practical work.
Our associates participate in a number of external seminars and courses including the compulsory lawyer course. In addition, each year Thommessen School offers 30-40 courses and seminars with internal and external speakers. The Norwegian Bar Association approves several of these events as compulsory further education.
Placement at the London office
As an associate you have the opportunity to be given a four month placement at our London office. Here you will work with ongoing assignments, particularly cases for international clients. You will also be part of the office’s marketing efforts.
Flexibility
Our associates and senior associates have the opportunity to work from home. In addition, you will also be provided with a mobile telephone which can access the office’s services.
Leave
We consider it positive that associates obtain new knowledge and experience outside the firm and arrange for deputy judge leave, study leave or leave to work with a client or in an overseas law firm.
